Yun Sol / Product decision case

Independent application case · Syfe Product Lead · Hong Kong first

When should my
investment plan change?

I'm Yun Sol. As an investor, I face this question too. I created this case to show how I would combine that perspective with consumer-product leadership at Syfe.

My proposed first bet

Help funded clients recognise when their investment plan needs a review. Show what changed, check the relevant context, and make the next step clear.

The problem to investigate

A market move, a new home-purchase date and an outdated balance are different situations. An investor may struggle to know which one warrants reviewing their plan.

My hypothesis

A clear plan-review journey could improve understanding, make advice more useful, and earn a lasting client relationship. Success means an informed next step.

The first segment to test: funded Hong Kong clients who are unsure whether a change in markets or personal circumstances means their plan needs attention.

Why this bet—and what already exists?

Syfe already offers goal-based Core portfolios and access to Wealth Experts. I would build a clearer route into the existing review and advice process, rather than assume new investment products are needed.

My own uncertainty about when to change an investment plan is the starting insight. It does not establish how many other clients share it. Public sources support the relevance of goals, horizon and risk; current app parity and demand still need checking.

I would defer automatic trading signals and bank aggregation. First test whether clients understand what changed, what information is missing, and which review is appropriate.

01 / Make the idea concrete

Jamie sees a change.
What needs a review?

Synthetic prototype

Jamie lives in Hong Kong and has a home goal in two years. Their portfolio value has fallen this month. They wonder whether to change the plan. Try a different situation below.

“Has something important changed—or am I reacting to the latest number?”
Review my plan · Proposed experience
Fictional situations · Fixed logic, not live advice

A price move alone is not a plan assessment.

Check whether the goal, horizon or product facts have changed. A falling balance alone cannot tell us what Jamie should buy, sell or keep.

What changes for the client?

A clearer way to distinguish a price move from a changed plan or missing information. The next step can be to check facts or seek a review, without pressure to trade.

What could change for Syfe?

Useful guidance could earn trust, better advice conversations and retained funded relationships. A genuine need to withdraw should be respected, not treated as a failed retention tactic.

02 / Earn the next investment

Test decision clarity first.
Then the commercial relationship.

Verify today's journey and interview 6–8 Hong Kong clients. Check whether they struggle with review timing, and whether Syfe already resolves it.

Treatment

A clearer plan-review journey

Explain the change, check current context and prepare the appropriate review questions.

Primary · Within 30 days

Can the client explain what needs reviewing?

Can they distinguish a market move, a changed goal and missing data—and identify the next check? Use a pre-set comprehension rubric.

Commercial · 90–180 days

Does clarity earn a lasting relationship?

Measure retained funded clients, net external flows and service cost. Separate market gains and goal-driven withdrawals from the value assessment.

Desired direction: better understanding and retained client value, without more unnecessary trades or misleading confidence. Agree numerical bars after checking baselines; no uplift is predicted here.

Assignment, evidence and rollout

Weeks 1–2: observe the current experience, confirm the need and audit existing features. Map the scope with Compliance and Wealth Experts.

Weeks 3–6: pilot one journey. Randomise eligible clients by account before offering it. Include declines and abandonment in the assigned-group result.

Weeks 7–12: inspect comprehension, corrections and useful review uptake. Read mature 90–180-day cohorts before wider scale. More clicks or adviser bookings alone are not proof of value.

Measurement: record cohort dates, denominators and confidence intervals. Pre-specify the rubric and segments. Compare outcomes against control, not a before-and-after chart. Classify goal-driven withdrawals consistently in both groups.

Regional reuse: reuse source labels, review triggers and evidence definitions. Review retirement rules, currencies, product availability and advice obligations separately in each market.

Continue

Clients understand the review triggers and limits. Mature client and commercial outcomes support the cost.

Iterate

The distinction helps, but the context check is too much work or the next step remains unclear.

Stop

Clients misread the view as advice to trade, stale data creates false confidence, or unnecessary actions increase.

03 / How I would lead the product area

A shared outcome.
A clear bar for the team.

I would own the client and commercial outcome, while leading 2–3 PMs across context capture, client understanding and the review journey. Each workstream would have a clear decision, evidence and dependency.

Develop PM judgement

Review customer evidence weekly. Challenge specs on missing data, success measures and failure states. Ask each PM which evidence would change their roadmap.

Use specialist depth well

Wealth Experts and Compliance own the advice and regulatory interpretation. Engineering and Data own reliable data handling. I align the scope and release bar across them.

Where AI could help—and where it would stop

AI could extract fields from consented documents and draft plain-language explanations from approved facts. The client would confirm the extracted context. Every figure needs a source and a date.

Balances and totals should use deterministic calculations. Missing information remains missing. Generating a goal label would not replace a suitability assessment.

Investment recommendations need the appropriate licensed process and review. The initial proposal adds no autonomous advice or trades. Compliance must assess the actual experience; a disclaimer alone is not a control.

The working prototype uses fixed text and calculations. It has no live AI, statement upload, account integration or adviser connection.

The decision

Make the next review easier to judge.

My first investment would be a small plan-review pilot. Help clients understand what changed and what needs checking. Test whether that earns trust and a stronger relationship with Syfe.

Sources, assumptions and limits

FACT: the role leads a wealth product, initially focused on Hong Kong, and 2–3 PMs. Role description

FACT: Syfe offers goal-based Core portfolios and access to Wealth Experts. Core portfolios · Wealth Experts

FACT: MPF access has retirement rules and permitted early-withdrawal grounds. The example does not count it as freely available for a home purchase. MPFA guidance

FACT: suitability requirements can depend on a platform's content, presentation and recommendations. Production scope needs qualified review. SFC guidance

FIRSTHAND CONTEXT: I have personally faced uncertainty about whether—and when—to change my investment plan. This does not establish that all clients share it.

INFERENCE: a clearer review journey may help similar clients. Public research does not prove that this is an unmet need in Syfe's current app.

CASE ASSUMPTION: Jamie, balances, market change, goals and responses are fictional. All amounts are in HKD; there is no forecast, complete net-worth calculation or live advice.

MY JUDGEMENT: test decision clarity before introducing automatic trading signals or aggregation.

UNKNOWN: demand, current app parity, internal economics and the best entry point. No interviews were invented.

MY EXPERIENCE: based on my confirmed career and investing accounts. Personal investing is not a claim of regulated wealth-management employment. PM-management duration remains unverified; no three-year claim is made.

Demo versus production: state clears on reload. A real service needs consent, privacy and retention controls, secure data handling, reconciled sources and regulatory review.
